Celebrate the 80s at the Museum of Decorative Arts

From October 13, 2022 to April 16, 2023, find a great exhibition on the 80s, presented in the nave of the Museum of Decorative Arts.

The 80’s have left their mark on everyone’s mind, be it in music, fashion or history. Indeed, this historic decade resonates in France as a political and artistic turning point in the fields of fashion, design and graphics, from the election of François Mitterrand in 1981 to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

This is why the Musée des Arts Décoratifs has decided to stage and celebrate them through 700 works: objects, furniture, fashion silhouettes, posters, photographs, music videos, record sleeves and fanzines, tracing this frenetic period synonymous with eclecticism and change.

The exhibition is punctuated by three themes that wonderfully reflect this renewal of ideas and forms specific to the decade: a new political and cultural era, design in effervescence and the look of the 80s.

Indeed, the 80s saw the birth of a new generation of designers, such as Olivier Gagnère, Elizabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti, Philippe Starck or Martin Szekely in a context more favorable to freedom of expression.

The silhouette, too, is freed from the injunctions of style and some fashion designers are elevated to the rank of “superstars” like Jean Paul Gaultier or Thierry Mugler, who allow themselves all the extravagance. Advertising, graphic design and audiovisual have had their heyday with, among others, Jean-Paul Goude, Jean-Baptiste Mondino and Etienne Robial. Finally, in music, a history of the party is written in the mythical places of the French capital, ranging from new-wave music to post-punk through hip-hop.

The scenography of the exhibition, which will take place in the nave of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, has been conceived as an upheaval of shapes and colors, and has been entrusted to the designer Adrien Rovero.
